Hello Carl Murdock,

I corresponded for several years, oh so long ago, with Carrie Kitts McCormick. What a woman! Some of her 'later' connections are rather suspect but the material in her 'book' seems solid. She also gave me a copy. I was not able to actually meet her until she was living in or near Fort Collins, Colorado with a caretaker. My loss, I am sure.

My husband's family are probably NOT connected to her line. Unless . . .

I have traced our Kitts line back into Wurtemberg (now Wurtemberg/Baden state in Germany), emigration 1749 to Chester/Delaware County PA. The immigrant was Jacob Katz, wife Maria Barbara Werner, and some of their children. Two sons, born in Pennsylvania, were Michael and John Kitts. Michael died unmarried in 1818. John had several children including a son named Michael.

I am currently trying to trace down this latter Michael Kitts. His birth year was probably sometime between 1806 and 1810. He is mentioned in his Uncle Michael's will. This Michael is probably one of the three males listed in his father's household in the 1810 census, males 0-10 category. He is probably also the male listed in his father's household in the 1820 census as age 10-16. That is the last we have been able to find of this Michael Kitts.

I realize if you are related to Carrie Kitts McCormick, then your line probably comes out of the southern states into Ohio rather than

from the Philadelphia PA area. However, I have been researching this family since 1956 and have learned to leave no stone unturned.

Please feel free to respond to me at mbkitts@home.com.

Thank you.

Maggie Kitts

Hi Kathie, there is a lady named Bev Walker who is researching Godfrey G.Cope

and the last address  ( Feb 1999 ) I had for her was User917826@aol.com ..

Bev thought that Charles Cope was marr.to Hannah ( Taylor ) and lists some of

the children for Charles and Hannah as this-

Hannah, Cynthia, Maria Ricketts, William and Henry Eldridge Cope.

I sent out a listing a few months ago on the 1790 census listing on all the

Copes' I found in PA and found this for Godfrey Cope and this census is

enumerated so thos i list by him have some kind of connection to him.

Subject: Cope family in Philadelphia, Pa.

Posted by: Beverly Walker

Message: Looking for anyone who connects to the family of Henry Cope, b. 1785 in Phila. and married Hannah Key(Kay). Their children were Charles, b. 1808, Henry b. 1811, John and William (b. 1815?). They lived in the Southwark section of the city. Charles Cope married a woman named Mary and had the following children...1. Henry Eldridge Cope..b. 1827, Hannah E. (m. John Taylor),

Cynthia Ann b. 1832 (M. James Sanborn), Maria Ricketts b. ca 1834 (m. Michael W. Young, William (m. Rebecca Simpson?), and Charles

I am looking for anyone related to the family of Henry Cope...b. 1785 and wife Hannah Key (of N.J.). Henry died young (1816)leaving son Charles Cope who married Mary ? and son Henry Cope..who married Mary ANderson. THere was a son William as well. CHarles had at least three surviving children. Cynthia.., Maria m. Michael Young-1853 and William, who married Rebecca Simpson. Most lived in Philadelphia, Pa. through the the 1800s and early part of this century. Any help would be great!!!!

New information from Pennsylvania wills.

I discovered the will of John Cope of Moyomensing (in Phila.) naming brother Godfrey Cope as executor in 1819. Wife was Mary. Sons Charles and John were listed and children of deceased son Henry.

Looks like Henry Cope was actually the nephew of Godfrey. THIS John Cope was born around 1756. Any ideas about when this family arrived in Phila. or other siblings of Godfrey G. Cope and John Cope. These are "German Copes" - the name might have been Coob or Coop.

CORRECTION:

Charles Cope was born in 1808 to Henry and Hannah Cope. Henry was born about

1785 and was very possibly the oldest child of Godfrey Cope and wife Maria Franz Cope. Henry died in 1816.

Hannah ran the store until her son CHarles came of age. Charles married a woman named Mary and had the following children. Henry Eldridge Cope, Hannah,

Cynthia, Maria Ricketts, and William.

He died in 1846, Mary before 1850. Hannah continued to raise the surviving children until her death in 1861. She is buried at Gloria Dei. Her age was stated as 80.

After research, I need to alter my original questions. Charles Cope was baptised at Michael Zion...the German Luthern Church in 1808. His parents were Henry Cope and Hannah. Henry only lived until 1816 and Charles died in the late 1840's. Charles' wife Mary(?) died before 1850 as well, leaving their children Cynthia Anne, Marie Ricketts, and William to be raised by their grandmother...Hannah who appears in the Phila 1850 census. She continued to run the Grocery (or Butcher Shop). There may have also been a daughter Hannah ...who married a Taylor. Again...any info on these Copes would be terrific!

The Old Goshenhoppen Lutheran Church records has a listing you may be interested in.

Henry Irwin, born 10 June 1868; bap. 16 Aug. 1868. Parents, Henry KOPE and wife Hanna, nee KEHR. Sponsors, the parents.

The dates between your family and this one are a little questionable, but with the similarities in names thought you might want to know.

It seems that the Charles Cope family was living in Phila., through the beginning of the twentieth century. I have found one record that lists the death of Godfrey Cope in 1829- age 72. I am curious about "name changes". The only link that I have between the two mentioned above is proximity of dwelling and the fact that both were grocers.

Followups:

Charles Cope was born in 1808 to Henry and Hannah Cope. Henry was born about

1785 and was very possibly the oldest child of Godfrey Cope and wife Maria Franz Cope. Henry died in 1816.

I am trying to identify Charles Cope b. 1790 or there abouts in Pa. Also Godfrey G. Cope. Both lived in Phila and are found in census records and City directories. I am wondering if these Copes were connected to the famous Lancaster Copes or are "German" Copes. Speculation suggests that the name might have originnally been Coper. Charles married a Hannah? Named daughters Cynthia and Maria Ricketts, sons were Charles and William. These Copes were in grocery business in Phila. ANY INFO WOULD BE GREAT! Thanks, Bev W.

Cynthia Ann Cope was also in the 1850 census, living with her grandmother, Hannah (Key) Cope and the rest. Cynthia's baptismal record is at Gloria Dei along with her mother's.

Reference msg list, 4 Apr, 2000, posted by Beverly Walker

James W. Sanborn, who married Cynthia Ann Cope, was born abt 1834 in Southwark, Philadelphia County, PA and died 19 Sep 1863 at Camp Buford, Md of dysentery. He was enlisted in the US Cavalry. James was the younger brother of my ggmother, Mary Magee Sanborn, born 27 Nov 1829 in Brooklyn, NY and who married John M. Salin 3 Nov 1853 in Philadelphia and died there 4 Feb 1896.

James and Cynthia had one child, Charles Sanborn born 2 Nov 1852, Philadelphia. After the death of his parents, Hannah Scott, Charles aunt was appointed guardian in 1866 and Maria Lindsey, also an aunt was appointed guardian in 1868. He received a pension until age 18 for the death of his father in military service. Charles married Margaret (Maggie)____, born abt 1857 in Philadelphia and they had five children. I have not discovered the occasion of his death Descendants are still living in the Philadelphia area but efforts to contact them to further family genealogy have been fruitless.

Sorry to be so late with a reply. I will happily share information about James W. Sanborn, aka James Sanders in the militay, if you wish.

Thank you so much for your information. I have found my research to be slow going. Just an aside, Charles Lindsay lived in the house of Hannah Cope and her grandchildren, Hannah Taylor, Maria, and William in the 1850 census. I have wondered if Maria became his wife. I can share more of the details of the Copes, if you would like. I also remember seeing Charles Sanbourn in later city directories and wondering if he was the descendant. Charles must have been named for Cynthia's father, Charles Cope. I have found Church records for her at both Gloria Dei and at Wharton Wesley Methodist Church. Once again, thank you. I am also happy to share what I have collected.
