Generation No. 1

1.  PHILLIP ADOLPH MICHEAL1 BROCKMAN was born May 07, 1743 in Wissoke,Ukraine source: 1819 Mecklenburg-Schwerin Census, Parchim page 147, and died January 20, 1822 in Parchim, Mecklenburg-Schwerin, Germany.  He married (1) ILSABLE MARIA MATZEN November 01, 1770 in Sankt Nicolai Church ,Schwerin, Germany.  She was born 1745 in Source:Ludwigslust Evangelische Kirchebuch, and died March 28, 1788 in Ludwigslust,Mecklenburg-Schwerin.  He married (2) MARGARETHA MAGDALENA PETERSSEN April 17, 1789 in Ludwigslust,Mecklenburg-Schwerin, daughter of CHRISTIAN PETERSEN.  She was born January 18, 1754 in Lenschow,Herrnburg,Mecklenburg-Strelitz, and died September 21, 1826 in Neustadt-Glewe,Mecklenburg-Schwerin, GR 19306.

They seem to have left Schwerin after Johann's birth in 1792. No confirmation records could be found for him and no other siblings born in Schwerin. In the census of 1819 Philipp and Margareth were living in Parchim with their son Heinrich and a servant. The census states that they had lived there 8 years putting their arrival about 1811. Philipp's occupation at the time was Inspector.

3/17/99 Philip's marriage record was found in 1789 in Ludwigslust. No parents names were mentioned. He is mentioned as a Cavalry Officer. This was his second marriage. The first one, to Ilsabe Maria Madsen, took place, November 1, 1770 in Schwerin at the Sankt Nicolai Church. (Evangelical)

In 1800 he tried to provide his wife with a future widow's place of living though he must have underestimated the problems of buying a dilapidated house and renovating it. He asked the government for support in the form of timber for rebuilding his house but it seems he didn't get it. The supplication mentions that he has five children most of them not yet of age.

Philipp Brockmann's supplication for retirement dated October 1808 states that he had served his government for 50 years. He asked for retirement due to feebleness of age. As we know he was a soldier until at least 1789, he must have entered the service as a teenager. It would seem that his post as a wood inspector was sort of a retirement post for a former soldier. He requested that his son, Friedrich Ludwig Franz, born of his first wife be appointed his successor.

My German researcher found another Brockmann family who may well be related to Philipp. Christian Friedrich Brockmann who was a lake administrator in Schwerin. From various christening records and similar occupations of these two Brockmann families, it is a lead worth pursuing in the future.

The social background of this family is highly interesting. It is definately an Upper class family. Both Johann and his father Philipp seemed to hold administrational posts and very likely were in the service of the Dukes of Mecklenburg-Schwerin. The sponsors at the children's christenings show more sponsors than usual and their occupations show upper class backgrounds as well.

Ludwig Brockmann,  age 23, a Native of Germany, (no landing date), Signed his Declaration on Dec. 8th, 1851, Pg in Bk 1, 925. Dubuque County, IA

Ludwig must have returned to Germany, at least for a visit. He is listed as a Sponsor for the Christening of his brother, Heinrich's daughter, Maria Louise Caroline Elisabeth Brockmann b 06/05/1857 and christened, 07/02/1857. He is listed in the church records for this baptism as Ludwig Brockmann, Ingenieur (Engineer) in North America.  Christenings usually take place a few days after a childs birth. Obviously, this one was delayed in order for Ludwig to make the trip from the US back to Mecklenburg for the Christening. So far,  I have not been able to find other records of Ludwig in America.

6/5/00- Joyce Sousa found some election results from Clayton County, Iowa and in November 1856, Lewis Brockman, democrat ran for County Surveyor and lost to the Republican candidate. Also the village of Clayton Center was surveyed in April, 1856 by Lewis Brockman for Fred Hartman, as proprietor. This is probably our Ludwig Brockmann. The occupation and time frame fit.

Ludwig must have stayed in Germany or returned there again as evidenced by the marriage in 1872 in Wismar when he was 44.

Notes for DR. CARL FRIEDRICH WILHELM BROCKMANN:

Carl Brockmann is certainly the most interesting of my German immigrant ancestors. According to family stories, Dr. Carl Brockmann met Dorothea aboard the ship on the way to the United States. Although Carl's main occupation was farming he had many other interests. He was an artist of some talent. An oil painting of Madonna and child was commissioned by the Catholic Church in Dubuque. I have a photo of this portrait which is still somewhere in the Dubuque vicinity. He was also a wood carver. In 1874, he carved the nameplate in "Old World" German lettering for the newly established St. Johns Evangelical Lutheran Church in Lore to which his family belonged. He played the piano, was an amateur astronomer and a free-thinker. He practiced homeopathic medicine. He was said to have taught at the local school which was originally named the Brockmann school in his honor. Family lore says that Carl's father wanted him to become a doctor of medicine as he was. Carl had wanted to be an artist. Probably a compromise was reached as Carl became a Doctor of Philosophy.

My German researcher discovered three publications by Dr. Karl Brockmann in Mecklenburg. I have copies of all three.  In one of the articles, he writes of the political revolutions of 1848. A group gathered  in Hagenow, Mecklenburg to discuss building a socialistic community in the United States and advertised for people to join them. He talked about socialization as a means of production. In regards to the community, this meant they wanted to keep the land, etc. in common property. The goals in this project do not appear to be religious just economical. In preparation for this venture, Dr. Brockmann and two other men visited the US in 1850 to scout ground. They visited several states. The one that Dr. Brockmann liked the best was a settlement of German and Swiss named "Communia" and located near Dubuque. Since our Carl Brockmann settled in Dubuque, this lends even more credence to the the fact that the author is our ancestor.  Also in an old interview of Carl's granddaughter, Bertha Baumgartner, conducted by Bud Baal, (Collette Brockmann's husband), she stated " A group of people decided to colonize the Lore area , all virgin timber then. Most of the people later moved to western Iowa, but the Brockmanns stayed."

From Professor Doctor Hans-Dietrich Gronau of the University of Rostock, January 18,2001:

"I called the head of our university archive and she found very

interesting files.I just went there and had a look.

There is a file, when he asked for accepting late immatriculation in

1845/46. I guess he was before in Berlin. There is also a curriculum vitae, but in latin. There is also a file according to his doctorate with certificate, protocol etc.

He got his Dr. phil degree on Jan 7, 1848 (if I remember well).

If you would like, the archive would make copies and send it to you. I

think that there are about 30 pages, the copy of 1 page is 0,50 DM + postage.

Let me know if you would like to order it. But then I also need your

mail address in Denver. Of course, you also could e-mail the head Mrs. Hartwig directly at universitaetsarchiv@ub.uni-rostock.de

Are you able to read latin ? Could be an interesting task to translate,

unfortunately, I am also unable to read. The reason that I couldn't find a reference of his thesis in the library is that the council may have accepted publications by him as thesis, although these were not declared as thesis. I also know definitely, from cases where people got doctorated by exams.

However, I'm sure that these files are very interesting for you."

Sincerely,

Dieter

(Received copies of all documents from University of Rostock file on 2/7/01 at no charge. The University said the copies are a gift!)

A long shot but my gggrandfather Henry Brockmann was born before 1825 in Schleswig-Holstein and died in 1850 in Germany. His wife Anna Eggers also of S-H was b. 18 oct 1813 and d. 29 may 1887 in Davenport, Scott County, IA. Sorry I have no more details of German life.

(Source: Parchim, St Georg Lutherisch Kirche Christening Records, 02/27/1821 Sponsors: Herr Joachim Heinrich Christian Siggelkow from Neustadt, grandfather; Herr Inspector Philipp Adolph Michael Brockmann, grandfather; Herr Conrector Joachim Christian Thede.), and died March 10, 1858 in Neustadt-Glewe, Mecklenburg, GR.  He married CHRISTINE HELENE LOUISE KITTEL.

Notes for DR. HEINRICH ADOLPH CHRISTIAN BROCKMANN:

Arrived in May of 1854. Signed his declaration of intent in Dubuque August 1854

Henry Brockman,  age 30, a Native of Germany, landed May 21st 1854, Signed his Declaration on Aug. 29th, 1854, Pg in Bk 1, 1197.

Since we now know that Heinrich died of consumption in March of 1858 in Mecklenburg and also that a child was born in January of 1856, if he came to America at all, he didn't stay. Perhaps he came with the intention of sending for his family but returned to Germany because of his illness. The Henry that came to the US in 1854 could also have been a nephew or cousin of Carl and Ludwig or totally unrelated. A mystery to be solved.

Am looking for information on my grandmother Julia Launspach's grandparents. Henry Brockman, b.1852, married Elsbeth Luchsinger? They had 12 children: Catherine, Lena, Anna, Elizabeth, Carl, John, Emma Louisa, Herman, Dora, Minnie, Ida. Lena, b.1877, married Phillip Henry Launspach, b.1856, in 1896. They had 6 children: Fred (Fritz), John, Catherine, Julia, Emma, Christina. P.H. divorced Lena in 1907 and she married Jim Cunningham. They had 4 children: Stella, Agnes, Lorraine, James. If anyone has information, I would greatly appreciate it.

Thank you,

Pamela

Burleigh Clark worked for the Illinois Central Railroad for 50 years. He started as a telegrapher in 1896 at Jesup Iowa. He went on to become a Station Agent in Jesup,  Peost,  Central City and Independence. At the time of his death he was mayor of Independence Iowa. He was a member of the Rotary Club; Masonic Lodge and Methodist Church. He had served as City Councilman for six years prior to his election as mayor. My early childhood memories include going on lots of rides in the car with Grandma and Grandpa Clark as well as going to the train depot in Independence to see Grandpa and watch the trains.
